Grand Champion - Katie Scott – BakerRipley

Houston Resident Chosen as 2019 WellCare Grand Champion of Southeast Texas

HOUSTON and TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 24, 2019) — WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG), a local Medicare Advantage health plan, announced Katie Scott of Houston as its 2019 Grand Champion of Southeast Texas at Minute Maid Park before the Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels game on Sept. 20. WellCare created the competition to honor individuals who help older adults in Southeast Texas live better, healthier lives.

Scott was presented with $25,000 for the charity of her choice, BakerRipley Dementia Day Center, the first dementia-specific adult day center in Houston. She was the chosen as the Grand Champion after the community voted on five WellCare Champion finalists.

Her nominator wrote, “Scott’s compassion for persons with dementia (PWD) is what sets her apart. She works tirelessly to advocate for older adults and family caregivers, and particularly for those coping with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.”

As a project director of Dementia Connection Expansion Project, she has developed new programs that focus on improving the quality of life for PWD; trained and counseled on how to identify and best serve PWD; and secured more than $2 million in federal demonstration grants for the Houston area.

Those who have worked with Scott say there is “no stopping her when it comes to finding new ways to fight the stigma of dementia.”

“WellCare is honored to recognize Katie and the important work she is doing for persons with dementia and family caregivers in the Houston community,” said Travis Christie, WellCare’s state president in Texas. “Her commitment to this cause is inspiring, and we share her goal of helping people have a better quality of life.”

WellCare Champions are Southeast Texas residents who are examples of how one person can make a difference in the lives of older adults. The Champions program complements WellCare’s commitment to making a difference in communities by honoring individuals who share WellCare’s goals of improving the quality of life and maximizing access to services for seniors and people with Medicare.

As of June 30, 2019, WellCare serves approximately 113,000 Medicare Advantage and Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan (D-SNP) members and 116,000 Medicare Prescription Drug Plan members in Texas.
